Most of my babies have been born after summer. With three of my four, I was pregnant all summer, so most of the time I needed winter postpartum clothes! But, with my first baby, I was only 4 months postpartum by the time summer was arriving, so I know what kind of nursing-friendly clothes I loved for the summer! Anything flowy and flattering was what I went for because my body felt so weird after having a baby. With my first, everything felt flabby, so I wasn’t ready for bikinis and short shorts. I like high or mid-rise shorts, flowy dresses and one-piece suits that were really cute, but also conservative. I also didn’t want clothes that were too expensive or designer because I just ended up getting spit up on everything, so I didn’t want to worry about ruining anything expensive! All of these items for your postpartum summer capsule you can grab on Amazon. I find that Amazon is just cheaper and so easy if you need to return anything.   It’s not just about the clothes fitting; it’s about them feeling right on my new body and accommodating my new life, which involves breastfeeding my first baby. The search for postpartum summer outfits has led me to treasure easy access, comfort, and looking good as my new style mantra. Gone are the days of squeezing into pre-pregnancy jeans, as now I rejoice in finding that perfect flowy dress or a pair of supportive bike shorts that make spending time outdoors with my little one both stylish and feasible. Embracing this new wardrobe era is liberating—a celebration of my postpartum body and the beautiful changes it has undergone. It’s about finding those friendly outfits that make me feel fabulous while being practical.

The Foundation: Supportive Undergarments

Embarking on the journey to find the perfect postpartum summer outfit starts with what lies beneath – the foundation of supportive undergarments. I’m talking about the critical role played by nursing bras and supportive leggings. These might not be the first things that cross your mind when dreaming up your postpartum wardrobe, but believe me, they’re the unsung heroes. Having gone through this not once but twice, I’ve realized that before even thinking about sliding into those cute tops or wrap dresses, ensuring that you have comfortable, yet supportive undergarments is key. For new moms out there, navigating through the maze of maternity wear and postpartum clothes, remember, a supportive bra is not just an option, it’s essential. It’s like laying down the first brick to your new wardrobe, offering not just comfort but also the confidence to step out in any outfit you choose. Trust me, investing in good quality nursing bras and leggings with just the right amount of stretch does wonders for your postpartum style and, importantly, how you feel in your new body.

Versatile Tops for New Moms

  • Button-down shirts: A great option for easy access, perfect for nursing moms looking to blend style with functionality. These can be paired with bike shorts for a casual look or denim shorts for days out.
  • Flowy tunics: Ideal for new moms embracing their new body, offering comfort and style. They can be worn over maternity jeans or loose pants, providing a flattering silhouette while keeping you cool during the summer months.
  • Nursing tanks: The backbone of any postpartum wardrobe, these tanks offer support and easy access for breastfeeding. They can be layered under a cute top or worn alone with athletic shorts for spending time outdoors with your new baby.

Summer Bottoms: Beyond Maternity Jeans

  • Drawstring waist shorts offer an unbeatable blend of ease and style, letting me adjust the fit perfectly for my postpartum shape while keeping up with the casual vibe of summer.
  • Flowy skirts have become my go-to for days when I want to feel a bit more dressed up without sacrificing comfort. They’re fantastic for keeping cool, offering freedom of movement, and they work so well with a cute top or even a flowy tank top.
  • Loose-fitting pants are great for those summer evenings out or simply running errands. After weeks postpartum, wearing something that feels good around my new body is my top priority. Options with stretchy waistbands or a drawstring waist ensure I’m not compromising on comfort.

Dresses That Do More

  • Wrap dresses: Not only do they effortlessly accommodate your new body shape, but their design also makes nursing a breeze, offering easy access for feeding your new baby. A great option for postpartum mamas seeking both style and practicality.
  • Flowy dresses: Perfect for the summer months, these dresses invite a breezy feeling that’s much needed. With a variety of patterns and colors, they keep you looking cute while embracing your postpartum body with grace and comfort.
  • Front zipper dresses: An excellent choice for easy nursing access, these dresses ensure you’re prepared for feeding your baby at any moment. The zipper adds a touch of modern style while being a functional feature for new moms.

Swimwear and Beachwear

Finding the right swimwear can feel daunting. You’re navigating your new body, all while wanting to soak up the joy of beach days with your little one. I’ve gone through this journey, and I’ve discovered a few golden rules for picking postpartum-friendly outfits that don’t compromise on style or comfort. Firstly, swimwear with good support is non-negotiable. A supportive bra or tankini that keeps everything in place, regardless of whether you’re chasing a toddler in the sand or dipping in the pool, is a game changer. Look for pieces with adjustable straps, ruched sides, or a built-in shelf bra.

Equally important is coverage. After my baby, I found that high-waisted bikini bottoms or one-pieces with a pinch of ruching across the belly offered that extra bit of confidence. Plus, they’re incredibly chic and come in various vibrant colors and patterns, ensuring you don’t have to sacrifice your personal style. And, for those moments when convenience is key (hello, nursing on a beach day!), swimwear with easy access, like front zippers or discreet lift-up layers, became my go-to choice. Embracing your post-baby shape with swimwear that feels both supportive and stylish makes all the difference in enjoying those precious summer moments with your new baby.

Accessories & Footwear: The Finishing Touches

As I dove into the journey of rediscovering my style postpartum, I realized how essential accessories and footwear are in elevating any outfit. Sun hats became my go-to for those sunny beach days or park visits, not just for the stylish flair they added, but for the practical sun protection they offered. Finding the right pair of supportive sandals was a game-changer; they had to be chic yet comfortable enough to keep up with the demands of motherhood. And let’s not forget the all-important spacious diaper bag. I sought one that was roomy enough for all the essentials but stylish enough to feel like a fashion statement. Each piece played a crucial role in my summer postpartum wardrobe, proving that functionality and fashion can indeed go hand in hand.

Creating Your Postpartum Capsule Wardrobe

I’ve come to realize that building a postpartum capsule wardrobe is the game-changer for us new mamas navigating the summertime with a new baby. It’s about merging postpartum comfort and style in a way that makes you feel fabulous, without spending every morning in a frenzy. After my first baby, my wardrobe needed a serious update. I turned to TikTok and other postpartum mamas for inspiration and learned some of the best tips on how to curate a collection of essentials.

  • Bike shorts and loose tops are your new best friends, especially if you’re a nursing mom. They offer easy access for breastfeeding, all while keeping you cool during the summer months
  • Wrap dresses and flowy dresses not only accommodate your postpartum body but also provide a cute and effortless look for any occasion.
  • Supportive bras and leggings should not be overlooked. A nursing bra that offers both support and convenience, along with high-waisted, supportive leggings, can be a great foundation for any outfit.

Crafting this postpartum capsule wardrobe has been a liberating journey for me, blending comfort, practicality, and style. It’s all about finding those pieces that make you feel great while they serve their purpose, day in and day out.
